Senate Moves On Defense Authorization Bill
The Senate voted 90 to 7 in favor of moving the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2017 (S. 2943) to conference committee, where senators will meet with representatives to create one bill from this and the previously-passed House version, H.R. 4909.
The legislation authorizes funding for critical national security needs, including military operations and readiness programs, as well as research and development. It also includes several line items of interest to the ocean sciences community, Navy’s Research, Development, Test and Evaluation; Basic Research; Applied Research; and Advanced Technology Development. Leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services committees are optimistic that differences between the bills can be resolved.
