NOAA Issues New Stock Status Criteria for Gulf of Maine Haddock and Cod
NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service announced interim restrictions on cod fishing in the Gulf of Maine, while nearly doubling the quota on the gulf’s haddock stock.
The plan would reduce cod fishing through time and area restrictions, catch limits and prohibition on recreational fishing. The rule was based on data demonstrating that the stock was facing near commercial extinction. “We are attempting to help halt the continued decline of cod in the hopes that it may rebuild to support viable fisheries in the future,” said NOAA Fisheries in a statement. “At the same time, to provide some fishing opportunity on abundant groundfish stocks in the near term, we are increasing the Gulf of Maine haddock quota.” Public Comments on the plan must be received by December 12, 2014.
